Inis Escargot operate a snail & suckler farm, as well as providing on-farm and virtual snail farm training, and are based in Maghera, Co. Cavan. The suckler farm produces top-quality weanlings and the snail farm rears, fattens, finishes and exports Inis Escargot snails direct from the farm.
Founder Peter Monaghan is passionate about farming and working the land, but recognised that his small suckler farm would not create a viable income on its own. He started to research a number of different enterprises to augment the farm’s income but after investigating a number of options, none seemed to be suitable as they would either incur too high of an investment or be high risk.
As part of his research Peter recognised that snail farming was a business that would work for him as there was a huge gap in the market for snails and it was also a business that required a low investment and had low risk. After further extensive research and a lot of hard work to ensure that he would make snail farming a success, in 2015 Peter established Inis Escargot.
Training for snail farmers
Wanting to pass on this knowledge to others who would like to embark on the business of snail farming, Peter Monaghan, using his years of experience and learning, has developed a unique training programme for those wishing to become a snail farmer. The training includes on-farm and virtual training and ongoing support as he would like to create a community / network of successful snail farmers in Ireland. According to Peter, “Snail farming produces a huge amount of product from a small piece of land and Ireland is the ideal location for this type of business”
